Originally from Milwaukee, Curtis Newman now resides near Sheboygan, WI. Curtis enjoyed 6 years living in the South in Greenville, SC and met so many wonderful people there and grew in so many ways by experiencing many new insights from which he developed a new perspective on life and art!
He prefers painting with oil paints and enjoys exploring different techniques and subject matter, particularly subjects that invoke tranquility and a peaceful environment. His eye just gravitates toward interesting scenes, situations, patterns and colors that he either wants to photograph or paint – usually both! He majored in Illustration at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and has been illustrating commercially for Harley-Davidson, Usinger Sausage, and German Fest using many mediums, digitally and traditionally. He feels the digital world and traditional methods are beginning to blend, each having their advantages and challenges. He loves painting animals, so naturally you will see pet portraits, as well as many other subjects, showcased on his website at www.curtisnewmanartist.com. Curtis finds it so rewarding when he paints a commissioned portrait and sees the glow of satisfaction on the customer’s face! By gravitating back to the traditional world of oil painting his senses have opened up to a refreshing experience, methodically sculpting light and shadows and pushing the pigment around to reconnect with the medium and create imagery he loves. Inspirations usually spring from photos Curtis has taken over the years. Pictures of his sons, the fleeting opportunity of a scenic landscape with the lighting and clouds in visual harmony or a simple still life can serve as a springboard for ideas and can spin off into extended concepts. He looks for interesting subjects, lighting situations and captivating scenarios that make the viewer wonder what's going on allowing them to participate in developing their own story and take ownership of the piece. He loves to observe and reinterpret all the textures, values and details found in his subjects and enjoys the challenge of what details to leave in and what to take out.
